The Gasometer Oberhausen
Oberhausen's Gasometer in the Centr0, situated between the Rhine-Herne Canal and the shopping and event centre the Centr0, is at the same time the town's new landmark and symbol of structural change in the Ruhr Region. The gasometer was erected in 1929 to store gas for a former coking plant and is probably today the most extraordinary exhibition hall in Europe. Time and again the gasometer has been an event in itself. The interior of this steel giant offers a unique spatial experience. The echo which reverberates between seven to eight times leaves the visitor both impressed and in awe. A glass panorama lift in the interior transports the visitor to the top. From here the whole western Ruhr Region is literally at your feet.
