Slinky Springs to Fame

From the Kaisergarten to the Emscherinsel is one of the absolute attractions in Oberhausen: “Slinky Springs to Fame“ – a bridge sculpture by the Frankfurt artist Tobias Rehberger. The unusual name comes from the 496 aluminum arches of the 406-meter-long bridge over the Rhein-Herne-KanalRehberger had a famous spiral toy in mind for his design, the running spring "Slinky", which was developed by the American mechanic Richard James around 1945, rather by chance. The bridge's surface is made of a material similar to a tartan track, which includes a total of 16 different colors, from yellow to orange, red and violet to turquoise, blue and brown. At night, "Slinky" is illuminated by 293 lights built into the aluminum spirals, which give the park landscape at Schloss Oberhausen an almost surreal atmosphere. "Slinky" is now one of the most famous and popular photo motifs in the Ruhr metropolis.
