Oberhausen confirms positive trend with current tourism figures + EM effect: In June 2024, more guests stayed overnight in local accommodation establishments than in any previous June + Oberhausen had only experienced a record year for tourism after the Corona period in 2023 + Oberhausener Wirtschafts- und Tourismusförderung GmbH (OWT) expects similar level for 2024
As the State Office for Statistics IT.NRW, based in Düsseldorf, announced today, a total of 27.966 overnight guests visited Oberhausen in June, spending a total of 56.711 nights in local accommodation establishments with more than ten beds. This corresponds to an increase of 24,3 percent in arrivals and 18,3 percent in overnight stays compared to the same month last year. The number of guests from abroad is particularly striking, with an increase of 53 percent. The total occupancy of the establishments was 46,9 percent of all beds offered in Oberhausen during this period. According to the Oberhausener Wirtschafts- und Tourismusförderung GmbH (OWT), this is the strongest June that Oberhausen has ever experienced in terms of tourism. Like the entire region, the city was able to benefit this month as a special effect from the events surrounding the European Football Championship. "Last but not least, national teams such as Portugal and England also set up camp in Oberhausen for a short time, which gave the city an additional image boost in North Rhine-Westphalia and beyond. This positive effect will certainly continue to be reflected in the number of overnight stays in the coming months, especially since major concerts such as Taylor Swift's tour stop in Gelsenkirchen in July also resulted in overnight stays in Oberhausen," says OWT Managing Director Andreas Henseler with conviction.
The overnight stay figures for the first half of 2024 also show a stable picture compared to the previous year's figures. From January to June inclusive, the figures were statistically exactly at the level of 2023, the most successful year for tourism in Oberhausen to date (282.077 compared to 282.001 overnight stays). The increase in the state average for North Rhine-Westphalia, which experts like to use as a comparison parameter to classify the relative competitive position, was somewhat higher at an increase of 1,7 percent. For Rainer Suhr, OWT Head of Tourism and Marketing, however, the medium-term development is important in this context: "On the one hand, the second half of the year is traditionally stronger for us. On the other hand, we have already taken a bigger step forward in 2023 than any other city in the Ruhr area. The fact that we have been able to maintain this high level is a great success. In view of the already foreseeable booking situation in the run-up to Christmas and the reopening of the Metronom Theater, we will certainly be able to exceed the positive figures of last year once again.” For more information, see www.owtgmbh.de and www.oberhausen-tourismus.de.
