LVR-Industriemuseum Peter-Behrens-Bau
The famous architect and industrial designer Peter Behrens won the architectural competition of the then Gutehoffnungshütte Oberhausen GHH in 1920. His design for a warehouse in Oberhausen followed the formal language of the Bauhaus and New Objectivity and thus embodied the ideas common in industry at the time: to rationalize and concentrate everything operational as much as possible. The approximately 1925-meter-long building was completed in 90. The result was a horizontally emphasized, cubically oriented structure with a steel skeleton construction. The steel construction was encased in a massive brickwork.
For decades, the GHH Group stored all the spare parts and consumables required for the company's operations here: from screws to bicycle tubes to writing paper. After the steel plant in Oberhausen was finally closed in the early 1990s, the main warehouse was available for a new use. In 1993, the Rhineland Regional Association acquired this outstanding work of industrial architecture. In 1998, the LVR-Industriemuseum the listed building as its new central depot: named after its architect Peter-Behrens-Bau.
