LVR-Industriemuseum St. Antony-Hütte
A little hidden am On the outskirts of Oberhausen-Osterfeld lies a half-timbered building that is picturesquely reflected in the Elpenbach pond. The visitor would not expect heavy industry here, and yet he stands in front of the only surviving architectural evidence of the St. Antony-Hütte, the “cradle of the Ruhr industry”.
Since 1758, the St. Antony-Hütte not only pig iron was produced. The foundries and molding shops also produced cast goods for everyday use. Today, only the residential and office building, which was built in the same year and was the former residence of the steelworks director, remains.
On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the company, a permanent exhibition on the eventful history of the St. Antony-Hütte integrated - after all, the first ironworks in the Ruhr region is considered to be the nucleus of the global corporation GHH (Gute-Hoffnungs-Hütte). In 2010, the first industrial archaeological park in Germany was opened, which made the excavations around the "cradle of the Ruhr industry" accessible to the public, protected from wind and weather by a daringly constructed steel roof.
