LVR-Industriemuseum Zinkfabrik Altenberg
LVR-Industriemuseum Zinkfabrik Altenberg – Past, present and future of the industrial age: The Zinkfabrik Altenberg was one of the oldest metalworking companies in Oberhausen. In 1854/55, favorable location conditions prompted the Belgian "Société anonyme de Zinc de la Vieille Montagne" to establish the zinc rolling mill: the Cologne-Minden railway station, as well as coal mines and steelworks, were in the immediate vicinity. After almost 130 years of production, the Oberhausen factory closed its doors in 1981. A socio-cultural center was created and in 1984 the Rhineland Regional Association took over part of the factory complex, where it opened an exhibition on the history of heavy industry on the Rhine and Ruhr in August 1997 on more than 3000 square meters. While the socio-cultural center SOVAT eV continues to offer its activities, the exhibition rooms of the Zinkfabrik Altenberg currently closed for renovation. The museum is expected to open in 2026 with a completely new permanent exhibition that will look at the past, present and future of the industrial age. The museum team and SOVAT eV also offer events in the last completely preserved factory complex from the time before the First World War in the Ruhr area. You can also book rooms for your events.
